When Aesin and Xafos did battle, Aesin had prepared his own magical blade, and dueled to a draw with Xafos. Xafos was not about to let Aesin leave that place, so he used a magical attack to trap Aesin's spirit in the blade. The effort killed Xafos, and Aesin's body died before mages could return his spirit. Thus, the sword was forever embued with Aesin's essence. The mages encased the blade in a trap of magic and physical barriers to keep any thieves out. However, over 200 years later, the infamous Garen Blacktooth looted the castle and made off with Sundown. He could not use it, however, because of Aesin's strong control over the actions of the sword. Aesin could even move the blade independently. Garen left the sword in a secluded area of wood, where it was discovered years later by Skandra Tyullis Pailn. Aesin consented to his use of the sword.

115 cm long, orange crystal blade embedded with 4 black opals around which runes are etched (though that are invisible to the naked eye). The hand guard is made of glass (glassteel) in the shape of a snake about to strike. The handle is made from a single (red) dragons tooth, which magically shapes itself to fit the wielders hand. The handle is partially hollow, the gap snugly fitting a diamond. The diamond is magical and has unknown powers. The pommel is made of the same substance as the blade and is spherical (unscrews), and painted in black with a setting sun.

Sundown, since it is essentially Aesin's spirit, is sentient, and has an intelligence of 17 and an ego of 22 (!). Aesin can also communicate telepathically with the wielder. It functions as a sword of +5 against magic using creatures (i.e. dragons and creatures with innate abilities), and a +7 vs. mages over Lvl. 10. When drawn from the scabbard, all the gems on the scabbard sparkle and glitter, and the snake hisses. This activates a Dispel Magic that centers on but does not affect the user, essentially protecting him from any and all magic. It also gives the wielder the following abilities: Fly, Read Magic, False Vision, Animate Dead, Death Spell, Finger of Death, Magic Negation and Anti-Fly, Find and Disable Traps (20' radius). Anti-Fly is flexible because it can be directed at a specific person or persons, thus allowing the wielder and his allies to continue to fly. Magic Negation, when used, cancels all the magical bonuses of the opponent, including spells, weapons, armor and items. Also, Sundown allows the wielder to breath underwater and swing the sword as if he were still on dry land (however, underwater the sword is reduced to +3 with no possibility of bonuses against creatures and mages). It can also generate non-dispellable energy wings that can be used to fly, giving the wielder the ability to move without penalty in almost all enviroments. Since Aesin has control of movement with the sword, it can be used as a boomerang or projectile, and the owner can still summon any of the bonuses and attacks that come with the sword, meaning that the person does not actually have to be holding the sword to use any of the spells, as long as it is at the same location he is. Aesin can also think independently and is extremely loyal to the sword's owner, meaning that if the sword is stolen, Aesin will shut off any and all bonuses, essential making Sundown a normal sword, with no +'s or bonuses.
